The 4th and 5th grade art class has been the recipient of incredible generosity from community volunteer "Mr. J" over the last few weeks and through the end of the school year.
What is important about Mr. J’s collection of more than 50 pieces of original comic art is that it includes one of the largest collections in the world featuring one of Marvel Comics’ most powerful Indigenous characters, Kushala, the Spirit Rider.
Kushala is Apache, born in the 1800s, and serves as her era’s Spirit of Vengeance and Sorcerer Supreme. Mr. J believed that, given the San Luis Valley’s diverse and sacred Indigenous history, San Luis, Colorado, would be the most meaningful place to share the original Marvel comic art of Kushala, the Spirit Rider.
Mr. J has been volunteering with our class twice a week and in addition to sharing his comic collection, he has brought in a variety of much needed art supplies for our classroom! Pencil sharpeners, rulers, sharpies, PENCILS!!, large erasers, and the specific type of paper needed for drafting comic book pages.
